Calamity’s Daughter
A CHARLIE CLAY STORY
LIE. ALL SHE DOES IS LIE.
Growing up caught between two worlds, Charlie Clay never felt the need to be honest. But after the charismatic Roan Ashwood and his family show her the first kindness she’s ever experienced, Charlie realizes it’s time to stop being a spectator in her own life. But will she ever tell those she loves most the truth of who she really is?
Everyone tells you to kill your darlings.
Mine get a second life here.
All writers know it: Sometimes you have to part with your favorite phrases, characters, or chapters for the sake of a better story. Even though they may never make it into (or back into) a manuscript, the darlings I've killed off get a second life in the Little Darlings blog — playing reimagined roles as short scenes available à la carte.
Darling Four
Warning: Contains Calamity’s Daughter spoilers!
Charlie’s head broke through the surface of the water. The air smelled musty and stale, and she couldn’t make out anything in the murky darkness. She might as well have been floating in space, but at least she wasn’t in that goddamn tunnel anymore, and she didn’t drown. Overall it felt like a win.
Darling Three
Trigger warning: This story deals with sexual assault.
Louise chewed on her cheek, her head tilted in curiosity. A crimson pool slowly crept across the black and white laminate tile of her kitchen floor. It was a cheap upgrade to the near-ancient house when she first bought it, and now it was something she, regrettably, would have to replace again.
